Tokoname and their legendary bonsai pots

Tokoname has produced the most recognized bonsai pottery in the last 900 years.   Tokoname is part of the 'Six Ancient Kilns of Japan', the others are: Bizen, Shigaraki, Tamba, Seto and Echizen.  Since the city of Tokoname is in close proximity to the sea, it was able to export more pots than the other cities and this is probably why it is the most well known.  Tokoname pottery is valued for the superior craftsmanship and attention to detail that is expressed by its tradesmen.  These examples of fine garden art are treasures that are found throughout Japan.  Another reason that separates this Japanese pottery from the others of the region is the quality of the clay that is used to produce them.

Touring the city you will discover that there are still many small shops and local potters proudly displaying their trade as did their ancestors.  Not only do they manufacture plant pots and garden pots of all designs, other ceramics of note are also made.  These include tea sets, bowls and jars made of their famed redware.   Even though most of the production is now done in factories,  the level mastery and attention to detail is remarkable.   Production of over 100 million pieces of ceramics is accomplished every year.

To properly display a bonsai one must choose a container which suits the potted plant.  Potted plants in the bonsai tradition are distinct forms of garden art and Tokoname is legendary for producing some of the most high quality and prized pieces among bonsai enthusiasts.
