Bonsai and Suiseki

The art of bonsai and suiseki are entwined in the beauty of Japanese garden design.  Each is separate unto itself but when combined they form a harmony that is truly wonderful.

Suiseki is the art of appreciating the natural beauty of stone.  Literally translated it is 'water stone'.  A suiseki is a viewing stone that is collected, prepared and displayed to form an arrangement that is a description of a landscape or beyond.  The art's derivation is ancient China and was brought to Japan in the middle ages.  As with bonsai, the Japanese embraced it and interpreted it in their own way.  It became an integral part Japanese landscape design and as such has become more well known.

The stones are collected from many different places.  They may be smoothed by streams or etched by wind blown slopes but they remain unaltered from their natural form.  In China more than one stone is incorporated into a display, but in Japan only one stone is used.  As detailed as a bonsai is cultivated, the suiseki is even more sophisticated to properly display.  The suiseki is planned as the ultimate complement in the design of  Japanese landscaping.  The thought that entails suiseki is spiritual and encompasses the entire process.

In Japanese garden design the combination of bonsai and suiseki is the ultimate representation of the vastness of nature and the power of the universe.  Gazing on a Japanese garden one can envision forests, mountains and oceans in miniature and it truly is a zen garden.
